About the Event
A Friend of Dorothy is a heartfelt and award-winning British short film exploring loneliness, identity, friendship, and human connection across generations. The story follows Dorothy, an elderly widow whose quiet routine is unexpectedly disrupted when teenager JJ accidentally kicks a football into her garden. What begins as a chance encounter develops into an unlikely friendship that proves transformative for them both.
Starring the legendary Miriam Margolyes and Stephen Fry, the film has been widely praised for its warmth, humour, and emotional honesty, with themes of compassion, belonging, and self-acceptance resonating deeply with audiences. The title itself references the historic phrase “friend of Dorothy”, once used within the LGBTQ+ community as a discreet way to identify one another.
We’re also delighted to welcome producer Lee Knight for a live Q&A after the screening, where he’ll share insights into the inspiration behind the film, the creative process, and the journey of bringing this story to life.
We’d love for you to join us for what promises to be a thoughtful, moving, and inspiring evening.
The event opens at 5:30 with networking drinks, to start at 6pm.
