About the Event
Come and join Hitachi PRIDE for a presentation on Queer TV.
A history and celebration of LGBTQIA+ representation on the Telly!
Presented By: Triangle LGBTQ+ Cultural Centre: Anthony Psaila and Deborah Astell.
Whilst queer people have been seen on screen since celluloid was invented, the way in which gays, lesbians and trans people have been portrayed has changed; reflecting the times, the changes in the law, and more recently as a result of who is now making film and tv and for whom. Historically, celluloid showed the queer community as a figure of fun, absurd gender stereotypes and the butt of the joke. Yet the 80’s, a decade marked by the AIDS crisis, political backlash and rebellious LGBTQ+ voices saw an emergence of independent and public access film making that changed the narrative toward the inclusive media landscape we see today. Featuring archival film clips demonstrating the various lenses Queer communities have been subjected to, this presentation charts a century of queer visibility in tv and film from risible, to coded, to prurient, to curious, to defiance, acceptance and finally celebration.
