Today, queer culture and diversity is fully embedded within mainstream music and performance. Do you remember the days when all we had were rumours about our favourite singers, where every lyric was decoded and every image scoured for signs of ‘difference’? And then, magically, performers appeared who challenged ‘acceptability’ and celebrated different identities, singing and performing with gay abandon. So, who were these early LGBTQ+ pioneers and innovators? This session looks at some seminal and often marginalized artists who transformed the musical landscape and inspired future generations to shape the rich and diverse contemporary popular music scene we enjoy today.
